Chinese Beijing Genome Institute (BGI), together with PentaBase of Denmark, yesterday announced that the two groups will increase their collaboration, with BGI (together with Danish BGI partner SD Genomics) and PentaBase aiming to co-develop kits for the detection of important clinical biomarkers. The kits will be based on Real-Time PCR.
"We have magnificent perspectives in creating a win-win situation," said Ulf B. Christensen, CEO, PentaBase, adding that it was a perfect fit between two parties with complementary knowledge and technology. With the general trend towards personalized medicine, the development of robust, sensitive and specific genetic diagnostics is a step towards this goal. Established in 1999 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is the largest genetic sequencing centre in Asia. BGI has been a core participant in all major international sequencing efforts, including the International Human Genome Project and the International HapMap Consortium. BGI has one of the largest bioinformatics teams in the world and has made a significant investment in state-of-the-art sequencing technologies, deploying more than 120 sequencing machines, 10 supercomputers, and 500 terabytes of storage. SD Genomics is BGI's European contact point PentaBase was founded in 2006 by the inventor of the DNA analogues Hydrophobic Nucleic Acid, HyNA and Intercalating Nucleic Acid, INA. The company has developed and marketed proprietary technologies for genetic diagnostics and research, including primers and probes for Real-Time PCR.
